Sandra had reached 267 pounds after relentless rounds of dieting and using Phen-fen, which caused a heart condition. Missy, her 27-year old middle daughter, was a 299 pound divorced mother of two.
 When Missy learned that her workplace insurance benefits included bariatric weight loss surgery, she proposed the procedure to her mom and sister. Sandra was concerned about her youngest daughter, Mandy, who hit 377 pounds: "Mandy was so overweight that I was scared for her. I thought if I had the surgery then it would make her want to do it."
In October 2001, Sandra and her daughters had their surgeries in Oxford, Mississippi.Today, Sandra is down to 140 pounds and her high blood pressure and diabetes are under control. "I always tried to blame my health problems on other things and not my weight. I now know that it was the weight and food that caused my health problems."
Missy, who now weighs 166 pounds, says, "I can accomplish a lot more now than when I was overweight. Before I felt helpless and dependent, and now I can do anything I want."
Mandy, down to 195 pounds, reports that she used to not go anywhere unless someone was with her. "Now I go places alone all the time. I think I still need to lose more weight, but I now have the confidence to be myself."
